Healthy employees mean productive and happy employees. Here at Anthro, we believe in healthy living. We want to encourage employees in their weight loss goals, so we add some significant extra motivation: For every 10 pounds an employee loses, they receive a paid day off.
Muyoka Mwarabu, Inside Sales Specialist, lost 14 pounds on the wellness program. Her daughter was 18 months old when she started at Anthro, and she was still struggling to get rid of the baby weight. “Coming to Anthro and hearing about the program was an extra kick to get me going,” she says. In addition to changing her eating habits, Muyoka started walking with a colleague on her lunch break, even eventually wearing out a pair of Toms shoes!
Order Entry Specialist Karen Nielsen earned a total of five days off with the program. She says that the chance to earn paid time off was a big motivator for her. She changed her diet and became more active in small ways– going to a bathroom on a different floor, for instance, and standing at her desk
Nielsen’s colleague in Order Entry, Nicole Kordenat, is on her third round of the program, and this time she has a very specific motivation: her wedding. She’s getting married in August, and she says the program is especially inspiring when you have a specific goal you’re working toward. “Actually, I need to try on my dress again to see if it fits,” she says, smiling.
Dana Free, Inside Sales, started the program in April after she’d gained some weight under the stress of job hunting. She lost it by walking and gardening, and by changing her habits at work. Standing at her desk has helped her keep the weight off, as well as jumping on her desk’s elliptical trainer every so often. She also uses a Nike Fuelband
, which reports how active she’s been and reminds her to get moving if she’s been static for too long.
As Dana’s experience in particular exemplifies, it’s not enough to exercise after work; you must also change your habits during the day to be active while working. Being sedentary all day at work is a surefire way to sabotage your weight loss efforts, so try these easy techniques during work to keep the weight off:

Stand Up – You burn more than double the amount of calories standing instead of sitting, and you’ll feel much more alert at the end of the day. More energy for an after-work trip to the gym! Invest in a standing desk, or make your own.
Wobble Ball – You might have seen these at your gym, but they’re great for the office, too. Your core and leg muscles will get a nice work out while you balance on the flat end of this half yoga ball.
Fitness Tracker – A simple fitness tracker, either a band or an app, is a great way to keep tabs on how much you’re moving during the day. Its presence alone will encourage you to walk downstairs for coffee, or speed walk around the block during your lunch break.
Elliptical Trainer – The neat thing about the elliptical trainer is that you can do it sitting or standing, and you’re killing two birds with one stone: working out while you work. Check out our blog post True Life: 8 Hours on an Elliptical Trainer for tips and tricks to using it.
