3 Things to Look for in a Standing Desk

by Maggie Summers | 9/3/2013 9:29:21 AM | 1 comments
Surely you’ve all heard by now that sitting is the smoking of our generation. Study after study has proven this to be true; even the American Medical Association, our country’s largest association of physicians, has officially recommended that Americans sit less during the day. For those who want to take a stand for their health, here are three things to look for in a standing desk.

1. Adjustability

The first thing to consider when searching for a standing desk is how adjustable you want it to be. Do you want to be able to sit every now and then, or do you want to stand all day, every day? We follow the maxim “everything in moderation,” and encourage people to sit and stand throughout the day. Some tasks may be conducive to standing (like researching and collaborating), while other tasks can be better to do while sitting (like writing and designing). There are a whole slew of desks that are fixed at a standing height, but consider whether that will sustainable for you in the long run. Our collection of sit/stand desks can be adjusted from 28” to 47” high. Sit or stand, you choose.

2. Cable Management

Perhaps one day in the near future, none of our electronics will need cords and cables to function. Or maybe that’s a pipe dream. Regardless, a rat’s nest of cables is a sight for sore eyes and makes management very difficult. Look for a standing desk with a cable management tray that you can route cords and cables through, thus killing two birds with one stone: getting rid of that eyesore, and keeping your equipment organized and easy to manage.

3. Cost

As with all decisions, cost is an important factor, and this is no exception. There are many, many articles on DIY standing desks, which are a great, quick (and cheap!) fix while you search for something more permanent. While some sit/stand desks are cheaper than others, don’t be too quick to choose the cheapest option. This purchase is an investment in your health and well-being, after all, so whatever desk you choose should be viewed as an investment.

As Kevin Michaluk, founder of the website CrackBerry, smartly points out in his essay on standing desks: if a standing desk costs around $3,000 but lasts 25+ years, it doesn’t turn out to be that expensive, which is why Michaluk chose to purchase Anthro’s Elevate Adjusta. Our lifetime warranty and commitment to building heavy-duty furniture guarantees a product that will last a long, long time while perpetually boosting your health and productivity.

Big news! We’re giving away TWO Elevate II standing desks in honor of our 29th birthday.

Do you use a standing desk? What was the most important factor in your decision?

Currently use a Standing Desk at work and love the flexibility it offers for switching up my day and allowing me to focus differently. Strongly considering a home option.
